Sonora, California is located at the base of the Sierra Nevadas and is named after the Sonoran miners who settled the area in 1848. They dubbed the city the “Queen of the Southern Mines". Today, Sonora offers residents museums and art galleries, theatre, and numerous festivals. Sonora also provides a variety of recreational activities among its many resorts, campgrounds, lakes, and golf courses.

Buying a Home in Sonora

Only 70 miles from Yosemite National Park, Sonora, Calif., is a city rich with history in mining, logging and railroading. Buying a home in Sonora means settling in the sunshine, and this charming town is host to everything from a farmer’s market to museums.

Sonora’s location, just three hours from San Francisco, makes perfect sense for city dwellers who long to get back to a simpler place. Numerous lots are for sale nestled in the foothills of the beautiful Sierra Nevadas. New home Realtors are prevalent and eager to help you find a lot or home surrounded by trees and with a warm cabin-like atmosphere, and, right now, prices in this area aren’t as exorbitant as in other parts of California.

Similar to Park City, Utah, Sonora is filled with a historic charm unique to old mining towns. Sonora is host to numerous art galleries and museums. During the summer, locals and tourists flock to the farmer’s market, which is filled with fresh fruit, vegetables and artisan breads, along with pottery, weaving and art.

Although Sonora is a small community, its public education system is rated above average by California standards. Class sizes are small, and the student to teacher ratio is low, with classes averaging 17 pupils.

The temperature rarely drops below 55, making this an ideal location for hiking, biking and camping. Living in an area surrounded by lakes, residents enjoy canoeing, boating and windsurfing.

Just 30 miles east of Sonora, however, is the Dodge River Wintersports Area where you can ski, snowboard snowshoe or cross-country ski in the winter.

In downtown Sonora, you can find everything from omelets at the Miners’ Shack to old-fashioned candy at the Main Street Sweets and Deli. In town, all of the restaurants are family-friendly.

New construction is averaging about $160,000. When purchasing real estate, however, buyers can find everything from cozy cabins to palatial estates.
